Red Fort Agra

Agra Fort is the most important and beautiful fort of India. The great mugals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb governed the country from here. It contains the largest Treasury and was visited by foreign ambassadors, travellers and the highest dignitaries. No other fort of India has this honour.
Agra Fort Stand just by the river Yamuna. It is one of the most important and strong hold built by the mugals. Sikandar Lodi (1487-1517) was the first sultan of Delhi to shift his capital from Delhi to Agra. After sikendar Lodi death in 1517 his son Ibrahim Lodi held it for 9 years until he was defeated and killed at Panipat in 1526. Several wells and mosque were built in the fort during that period. After panipat, Mughal capture Agra fort .Babur stayed in the front in the palace of Ibrahim, He built a step well in it. Humayun was coronated here in 1530, after his defeat at chausa in 1539. He returned to Agra. Humayun was defeated at balgram in 1540, Sher Shah held it for 5 years. The mugal defeated the Afghans? finally at Panipat in 1556.Realizing the importance of Agra, Akbar arrived here in 1558. His historian Abul Fazl recorded that this was a brick fort and was ordered by Emperor Akbar to be rebuilt with red sand stone on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh.

After Akbar?s death Jahangir was coronated in the fort in 1605.Agra continued to be the capital of Mughal Empire. Shah Jahan was crowned in the fort in 1628. Aurangzeb imprisoned his own father Shah Jahan in the fort for 8 years until he died in 1666. Shah Jahan was buried in the Taj Mahal. The barbicans around the two gates were built by Aurangzeb to strengthen its Defences?. After Shah Jahan's death, Agra lost its Grandeur. Shivaji came to Agra in 1666 and met Aurangzeb in Diwan-I-Khas. He was betrayed and Imprisoned, Ultimately he escaped from here. Aurangzeb died in 1707. For some time Agra Fort was held by Jats and Marathas and finally British captured it from the Marathas in 1803.
